Scenic Design
THE AMATEURS
For my second substantial set design project, I chose an unusual venue — the courtyard at the Hirshhorn Museum. Like the play, the design concept is informed by Medieval culture, including pageant wagons and bible stories. It is also stylized, geometric, and modern, like the venue.
Tall open-work screens allude to medieval rood screens, and some of the spaces in the screens would be filled with color, like stained glass — all of this to give the suggestion of a church. The top portion of the wagon is treated similarly, to create a unified statement. The curved platforms create a dynamic, multi-level playing space.
